Conclusion
The Son Becomes the Father
After a while, Carlos again emerged from the cool clear water. His wet clothes clung to him causing great discomfort. He looked back at Ben and questioned whose bright idea this had been then dropped on the shore for a few minutes to rest in the sun before heading back to the house. One could say he had cooled off!
Ben agreed with Carlos that the discomfort was far more than the swim was worth. He, too, rose up out of the water thinking to head for home. His red hair was matted to his head until he gave it a shake and as he ruffled his hands through it, small curls began to appear glistening in the sunlight and he could feel the water running in beads down his face... He had another thought... He paused, looked back over his shoulder at the lake and pondered. He raised his eyebrows and a devilish little grin appeared. Now that he was alone, he decided to peel off his wet clothes. He looked to the north and the south - over his shoulder to the east and through the trees to his west. He was satisfied he was alone. Pulling free of the sopping wet cloth was not easy, in fact it was a bit of a struggle. He wished someone was there to help... Finally, after a very impatient tug of war with his britches, he managed to free himself of the last bit of clothing. He stood for a moment, lifted his face to the sun and basked in its warmth before heading back towards the lake with a jump and a skip, diving headon into its cool refreshing waters and thoroughly enjoyed the swim, completely unrestricted....

"Pa?... Pa?... Pa?"
"What? Yes? Joseph, what is it, Son?"
"Pa, what are ya doin' sittin' here in the dark? Are you ok, Pa?'
Ben cleared his throat as he abruptly removed his booted feet from the windowsill and sat up straight. "Yes... yes, Son, I am fine... I was just thinking."
"About Carlos?"
"Yeah. How did you know?"
"Just did, that's all. You miss him, dontchaPa?"
"Very much."
"Me, too."
"I think we always will, Son."
"Yes, Sir."
Joe settled into the comfort of his father's warm embrace and they remained their together, in the darkness, silent... until they fell asleep.
